Working from home is an awesome thing. You can work on your own schedule and get more done in less time than you would if you were in the office all day. There are a lot of people who have success with working from home, but there are also some risks.
One of the problems many people encounter is that because they are not in a typical office setting where there are colleagues and bosses around, they can do whatever they want while working – including drinking alcohol. Not only could this affect your work and productivity, but it could also lead to binge drinking and alcohol abuse.
In this article, we will discuss how to avoid drinking alcohol while working from home. These are tips that you can keep in mind so that you don’t fall into the trap of getting that glass of wine or bottle of beer while working on your deadlines.
Tip #1: Have Healthy Meals On Time
One way to keep you energized all day is to have regular meals. Start your day with a power breakfast. By starting your day filled up with the right nutrients, you’re setting the tone for a productive day ahead.
Don’t forget to eat lunch at a set schedule. Avoid skipping meals or eating at irregular times because making yourself hungry could heighten your stress, which may cause you to crave alcohol.
Tip #2: Remove Alcoholic Drinks From Your Home
Imagine yourself craving a bottle of wine or a can of White Claw… If you’re in the office, it’s unprofessional to drink alcohol while you’re in a meeting or while you’re working on your files. But when you’re at home, it’s very easy just to go to the kitchen and grab yourself some booze.
To avoid this from becoming a habit, it’s a good idea to make it harder for yourself to access alcohol while working from home. As the cliché goes: “Out of sight, out of mind”.
By getting rid of your alcohol stash, you’re removing temptations to drink alcohol while working. Go through your kitchen cabinets and your pantry to make sure there is no remaining alcohol in your house.
Tip #3: Explore Healthier Drink Alternatives

If this is the case, try to find some healthier drink alternatives as an alcohol replacement. Try some teas, natural juices, and other healthy beverages.
Try to avoid drinking too much coffee and sugary drinks as this could also cause other health problems that may affect your work.
Tip #4: Take Breaks Outdoors
One of the primary reasons employees drink alcohol is because of the stress they’re feeling from work. Drinking alcohol is usually seen as an “acceptable” after work activity to loosen up and socialize. The problem, however, is that when you’re working from home, nobody can really stop you from drinking at all hours.
One way to avoid the urge to drink when you’re getting stressed is to take regular breaks. If possible, go out of the house and walk around the backyard or around the street to get some fresh air. This could help give you a bit of mental clarity and recharge your energy.
Tip #5: Keep Track of Your Hours
While some people feel that they become unproductive when working from home, it’s possible to experience the opposite. A lot of employees find it difficult to keep track of their hours so they end up working overtime. This is because when you are at home, nobody is there to turn down the lights or tell you to leave. You also don’t have a bus to catch or traffic to avoid.
While there’s nothing wrong in working extra when there’s a deadline to catch, doing this everyday will drain your energy. Even if you are your own boss and you’re controlling your own hours, it’s important to know when to call it a day. As already mentioned, overworking leads to stress which can make you drink alcohol.
Stay Healthy While Working From Home
Drinking alcohol while in front of a computer screen all day isn’t great for overall health, but it’s especially dangerous when you’re trying to stay productive on company time with no one around to judge how much wine was spilled on your keyboard. Remember that avoiding alcohol is important for your health and well-being, not just your work performance!
